What are readers saying about “Pictures in Glass Frames?”

Posted on 2 Comments

Pictures in Glass Frames displays an honest, emotional journey that I rarely see in Christian writing. Through the author’s stories, you can feel her passion, get to know her previous pain, and observe a beautiful restoration. Without being didactic, this devotional reminds you that in a world of confusion and pain, you are not alone. The book’s encouraging message of conquering your circumstances extends beyond a Christian sphere and can be applied to any reader who has ever been affected by the unavoidable challenges of life. – Diane Kurz

From the hopeful opening inscription “His plan will come to fruition regardless of your circumstances” reading this devotional will remind you to persevere and stick close to God. The devotional centers on striking balance in life between humility and self-respect, sin and salvation, right living and being filled with righteousness, loving others and accepting love, guidance and grace, introspection and interaction and daily functions and God’s purposes, to name a few. Shawn Jones pulls themes from scripture that opens each devotional and applies them to life honestly and openly. Some themes include the power of words, structurally sound relationships, forgiveness, and focus. This devotion truely connects life to scripture. – Sparker

Shawn, I catch the train with a lady by the name of… we have been catching the train for about 15 years.I sold her one of your books about a month ago.  She told me to let you know that her family recently suffered 2 tragedies within the last 2 months and she fell into a deep depression.  She said the book lifted her out of the depression and she passed the book on to another friend so they too could receive a blessing. –LJ

I was so impressed with this beautiful book!! Shawn Jones has an obvious love of the Lord and it is reflected in every page. I really enjoyed Pictures in Glass Frames and hope it’s not her last book! I carried her book around until I was done reading it, and then I started reading it again! I think it’s the kind of book I’ll be reading again and again, enjoying it more each time, and getting more out of it the more I read it. It’s good to be reminded sometimes of how much we should be praying and that we’re never too old to learn something new in the Lord, every day. I really felt a strong affinity to this beautiful author. Her words really hit home in so many ways. –Deb

Shawn, there is a  lady named …I brought her a book of yours to read yesterday.  I saw her this morning and asked if she started reading the book.  She grabbed my hand and said, “…I read the entire book last night, I cried because the book was so touching.”   She wants to order books for family and friends.-LJ

Mrs. Jones, I want to take some time to let you know how much I enjoyed your book… There were two chapters in particular that spoke to me because of the way I choose to live my life (Chapters 19 and 33). I feel too, that it is so important to give back to others even when we are in need ourselves. I believe that by doing so, we receive many unexpected blessings and we also teach (and show) our children that compassion for others is a gift in itself.

Thank you again for your wonderful words. We will continue to recommend your devotional to others!-ST

Your niece’s book is awesome!!!!  It touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes.  My mother is in the hospital and is on the ventilator.  I’m so sad to hear that she is not feeling well.  I don’t want her to suffer like this…The part in the book about your mother was so touching.  How Rhonda saw her in Heaven and she interceded for her.  This was beautiful!!-D

I was happy when I received Pictures in Glass Frames in my mailbox a few days ago. After reading the 1st three devotionals, I couldn’t help but think this is unlike any devotional I have ever read in the past. It’s open, honest, intriguing and thought-provoking. It shows that through ones pain and triumphs, God is building character, developing faith, and extending His grace.

A page-turner for sure.  –Lynette Pennington

These devotions are food for thought for any day, any time, and anybody. Every devotion starts with a verse and ends with a short prayer, but just reading the first paragraph of the first devotion (called “Your Life Has Significant Value”) is enough to let you know you’re in for something different from other devotional books you might have read:

“I wasn’t born into the best circumstances. My mother was seventeen years old, on her way to college on a full scholarship. When she became pregnant, my grandmother was devastated. Too poor to pay the doctor to perform an illegal abortion, they experimented with pills, Tanqueray Gin, turpentine, and boiling water. When the popular home remedy failed, my mother…was supposed to put me up for adoption, return home to Atlantic City, and prepare to leave for Howard University in the fall. However, when she was eight months pregnant, she changed her mind and refused to sign the adoption papers.”

That’s a level of honesty about the trials of life we face, even as Christians, that’s hard to find in a lot of Christian writing. Not all of the devotions are as heavy. Some are light and funny. But they are all honest pictures of life backed by spiritual messages I thought were powerful and encouraging. I also really like that this isn’t a daily devotional. They’re organized according to common themes, but since they aren’t dated, you can read them in whatever order you want, whenever you want. I usually pick one at random to read before I go to bed, but the stories of her life and the way she tells them make for such good reading that 9 times out of 10 I end up reading a few more. I never would have thought a Christian devotional could be described as a page-turner, but that’s what this is. And I’m not the only one. I gave a number of copies to friends for Christmas and the feedback I’ve gotten has all been the same–they loved it and couldn’t stop reading it. –Rashonda R.

It is somewhat difficult to put into words my reactions when I began reading Pictures in Glass Frames.Initially,I felt that I was falling short on my faith in God because I was not at the unwavering level of devotion that was so humbly expressed throughout the book. I started reviving myself by dusting off the stack of prayer books on my nightstand and digesting the material again.I weaved the Lord’s Prayer back into my days. I felt that I had to make up for time lost. The life experiences of this young woman were so powerfully written that I have seen tears fall as the first page was read. In other words, she has touched the hearts and souls of others through her faith, strength, and wisdom. Pictures in Glass Frames is well-penned by an awesome individual who knows the power of prayer. –Rhonda C. Fitzgerald

Pictures in Glass Frames is a devotional that provides nourishment for the spirit and for the soul. It is unlike any devotional book that I have read. Shawn’s generosity in sharing her personal life stories reinforces the reality of life’s ups and downs and how faith in God and the power of prayer can bring peace to one’s life.

I particularly enjoy the prayers at the end of each passage. Everyone does not know how to pray, so Shawn’s simple yet powerful prayers serve as an excellent example the simplicity of prayer and the power of its outcome.

When I read the first passage, I wanted to sit down and read the book from cover-to-cover without interruptions. However, I did not. I decided to read it slowly to savor and digest its powerful messages. I start each day by reading Pictures in Glass Frames. Additionally, the book is my lunch companion and functions as my spiritual stimulus for the afternoon.
This book is for anyone, regardless of one’s religious affiliation or not. In spite of one’s personal challenges and tragedies, the power of her words within her stories can encourage and inspire anyone to move forward. –Tanya
